LOS ANGELES — American Honda reported a sales gain of 12 percent in September on a 20 percent jump in light trucks. For the third quarter, sales fell 9.5 percent.
Sales at the Japanese automaker had fallen for six straight months from March to August because of the coronavirus shutdown, followed by inventory shortages as North American factories struggled to get back to full capacity.
Honda and Acura brand sales through the first three quarters of the year fell 19 percent compared with the same period last year, American Honda said.

Notable nameplates: Honda Civic, up 0.2% in September; Accord, down 0.9%; CR-V, up 30%; Passport, up 48%; Pilot, up 15%; Acura ILX, up 28%; TLX, up 6.1%; RDX, up 6.4%; MDX, up 28%
Incentives: $1,941 per vehicle, down 3.7% from a year earlier, ALG says.
Average transaction price: $30,282, up 3.7% from a year earlier, according to ALG.
Quote: "September marks a high-water mark for Honda sales this year with double-digit gains and our first month in positive territory since the pandemic began," Dave Gardner, executive vice president of national operations at American Honda, said in a statement.
Did you know? Honda's CR-V compact crossover set a September record for deliveries, at 33,572. Likewise, the Passport midsize crossover set a September record, at 4,281 deliveries.
